Annual plants and flowers are the showstoppers of the landscape. They last only a season and put on all of their growth and bloom in a short period of time. Vintage annual flowers such as geraniums, petunias, impatiens and begonias have always been staples in many flower beds, mixed borders and hanging baskets.
Perennial plants are the true performers in the landscape! In their ideal conditions, these plants will return year after year and even offer the possibility of division for increasing their numbers in the garden. Typically, perennials have a shorter period of bloom than annuals do, so it’s important to look at all of the characteristics of a plant when choosing it for a space. Does it have a unique leaf shape? Is the colour of its foliage a feature? Will it have fall colour? Does it produce a seed pod or a berry? These are all features of a perennial that in combination with its bloom, will make it worthy of its placement.
When designing any garden, perennial bed or border,it is important to consider the succession of bloom. Referred to as succession planting, planning the season of bloom from early spring through to late fall ensures that your garden is providing happiness all year!
